Henley to Harwich
Day 1 - Wednesday 21st May 2008

Ian Rambles
First day! Some loud complaints from underused muscles and overstretched boys as we carried our bags down to the station. Most of our load is books - books to read, guide books for the journey - but we just have to be able to stagger slowly between trains and ferries, we aren't backpackers, yet.

I haven't got my head round the scale of our trip. Quite possibly I never will. I'm entirely focussed on the current stage, getting to the ship without losing too many boys, bags or books.

Fiona's Journal
An unexpectedly eventful first day considering that all we had to do was get ourselves to Harwich and board a ferry to Europort. Despite several “rationalisation” sessions over the last week, halving the number of books we first amassed and weeding out all inessential clothing, we are at the absolute limits of what we can carry between us.

We closed our front door behind us at 4.15pm and set off for the station, resolutely resisting our neighbour Andrew's kind offer of a lift. We had to prove to ourselves that we could actually carry all our luggage at least short distances, from one mode of transport to the next. George and Harry were groaning and muttering before we had managed 200 yards of out 20,000 mile journey! The train journey from Henley to Paddington was uneventful. The tube was blessedly uncrowded and delivered us efficiently to Liverpool Street where we had time for a drink and a hot pasty before boarding the train to Harwich International.

On Witham station waiting for news.

Somewhere just beyond Cheltenham our train came to a halt at Witham in what looked like a massive train traffic jam. It transpired that there had been “a fatality on the line” and until the forensic team had done their work and the coroner gave the word, we were going nowhere. I am ashamed to admit that my thoughts were entirely preoccupied with a mild panic about what we would do if we missed our ferry and I spared barely a thought for the victim or his/her family or indeed the unfortunate train driver involved.

The rail company ( NEEA ) managed the situation very well, kept us informed and, when it became clear that it would be some hours before the line was cleared, they laid on a bus to transport all of the ferry passengers to Harwich.. We did make it, though without much time to spare. I had hoped to send my Mum and Dad their first postcard (Mum requests that we send one from every place we visit on this trip so really that should start with Harwich) but we did not have enough time to find a place to buy one. However, we have accomplished the first small step (albeit in the wrong direction) of our round the world journey.

Arthur's Log:
Packing Packing Packing Packing! Mum got started, getting very worked up about even the little things and making a big deal out of them like “You can't take a half full bottle of shower gel! It wastes too much space!” And so on.

At some station or other we were stopped for 45 minutes because some dumb-ass (excuse my lack of caring) got hit by a train on the track just ahead, so we got our own private bus with a “sorry out of service” flashing - cool! .

George has taken to (instead of walking) running flat out for 100 yards then collapsing on the floor panting which seems very illogical to me.

We're on the ferry, knackered. Wandering around the ship I can't see even one teenager until I found about 20 of them all in a room marked “the teenager room!”Teens don't usually loiter where you want them to!!

The Harry Report
The only interesting thing that happened on our train journey was someone died on the train track and a forensics team had to check it out. We didn't get to see them but I imagined it in my head.

We got to the ferry hastily checked in and then promptly collapsed in the cabin but I knew that tomorrow we would have to do it all over again.

It was bumpy on the bus!

Why are there two Burger Kings on Liverpool Street Station?
