340 Miles

Ian Rambles
Well. It was one way to Amarillo. Lots of small towns and interesting driving. Still in the bible belt - with the biggest cross in the western hemisphere to pass in Texas.

Fiona's Journal
Another day on the road today, 340 miles from Oklahoma City to to Amarillo, Texas. And yes we did keep singing that song although we could only remember two lines of it.

We stopped off at the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, OK. Which was full of interesting stuff including a beautifully restored and working Juke Box and a mock up of a classic 1950's roadside diner. What's more they actually sold postage stamps in the gift shop, and knew how much postage I needed in order to send a card to England, so some of those postcards might actually get posted at last, when I can remember where I've packed them all away.

We hadn't booked ahead for tonight so we took pot-luck at an American Budget Value Motel. It was the two storey version of the terraced style motel with iron first floor veranda railings that you could imagine some film hero vaulting over. It had a shabby 70's décor. One of the beds collapsed at one corner when Harry sat on it, so we brought in a pile of books from the car to prop it up ( I knew we had lugged this weight of reading material, a quarter of the way round the world, for some good reason). The air-conditioner was so noisy that we had to jam a chair against it, and a shoe under it, to dampen the rattle, there was no controller for the TV and there was only one mug to share between the five of us. Other that it was fine.

It had WiFi and a swimming pool and those have become our defining requirements. Anyway we were too tired to care much. Three hundred and forty miles doesn't seem that much in a day but I am surprised how the constant glare of the sun, reflecting off the whitish surface of the concrete roads makes my eyes tired and the concentration needed so as not to miss the unfamiliar signposting and road markings does the same to my brain!

Arthur's Log:
Cool museum. Lots of odd things. Very retro. Lots of neon and bright red and yellow. Plastic leather and one of those really old record players.

In the motel there is a horribly rattly air con unit so we have to have a chair stuck between the bed and the ac unit to quiten it down.

A gross story - true.
On my arm there was a large bubble of fluid. Me and George were in the pool. He got pissed off and slapped me on the shoulder. The bubble popped! George looked ill and tried to get the fluid off his head. I said "Ow Ow Ow ...". Good ey!

The Harry Report
The museum was very good. George and I had lots of fun messing about in the diner.

George's Musings
I especially liked the mock "Diner" and the Wurlitzer juke box.
