Vancouver
Day 66
Fri Jul 25

Ian Rambles
I liked Vancouver. The tall buildings looked like piles of human scaled units rather than the glass towers so commonly used to massage architecys egos.

An intriguing sculpture on the waterfront, looked like a shed but was all cast out of aluminum - right down to barnacles on the posts.

Fiona's Journal
An excellent day in Vancouver. We caught the Skytrain – driverless trains running on tracks raised above ground – to “Waterfront”. We sat and watched life going on in the busy harbour for a while. It is a hive of activity with seaplanes taking off and landing every few minutes among the yachts and dinghies and motor cruisers. There is a Chevron gas station out in the middle of the harbour that looks exactly like a roadside one – except that it is boats that pull in. There are some colourful and whacky houseboats among the white plastic cruisers in the marina. A lively place and I would like to sail out of here.
We walked along the seawall to Stanley Park and the Aquarium – which is so good that we spent the rest of the day there. They have a beautiful Beluga whale with a six week old calf and it was lovely watching them swim together. I am very unsure of the ethics of keeping such creatures captive but it is a privilege to have seen them so close to.
The sea otters are charming and funny and can lie about on the surface of the water as though it was a feather bed. Tropical fish, beautiful and colourful and many with charming, almost human, faces.
Some really big fresh water fish from the Amazon looked prehistoric and sinister. There were huge sea turtles, enormous clams, and sea horses disguised to look like the weed they attached themselves to. They also had a collection of frogs and toads – and also monkeys, bats, butterflies, insects and plants appropriate to the ecosystem of the aquatic animals.
We left the aquarium about 4:30, hopping off the Skytrain at Metrotown to stock up with goodies for our flight to Japan before returning to the RV for a round of cleaning and discarding ready to return it in the morning.

Arthur's Log:
We took the skytrain into town. The wierd thing is that there is no driver and you can sit in the drivers position and look out of the forward window.

The aquarium was huge. There were beluga whales, one just a few weeks old. There were porpoises that jumped fifteen feet out of the water. The sea turtles were awesome. There were amazonian fish that are believed to have existed since prehistoric times with huge black eyes.

Sea otters manage to get through 6000 calories a day without gaining weight.

George's Musings
The alien worms were quite funny - the way they looked around.
