The main reason that I wanted to include Stockholm on our itinerary is the Vasa museum. We have been to see the Mary Rose in Prtsmouth a couple of times - but the Vasa is in a league of its own. Amazingly complete it is presented incredibly well in its custom built museum. Hopefully the Mary Rose trust will be able to make their half a ship as impressive!

We took a rather elegant, overnight ferry across the Baltic to Sweden and a train to Stockholm. We spent two nights in another Hostelling International hostel called “af Chapman”, because most of its accommodation is on board a beautiful 245 foot square-rigger of that name. Sadly, our room was in the adjacent building on dry land but it was still a great place to stay and Stockholm itself is a beautiful city and on a human scale. It was even more expensive than Helsinki!
I took great pleasure in wandering and window shopping around its maze of narrow cobbled streets and bridges and on one occasion came across a man playing music on a tray of a couple of dozen wine glasses with different levels of water in them. He was playing the theme music from the Harry Potter films and it sounded hauntingly beautiful.

Fishing with a lift net.

Looking across the water to the Tivoli roller coasters. Disappointingly the park had closed a few days before our arrival.

When I couldn't find a map of the bus routes I took a set of photos of the maps in a bus shelter so that I could refer to them in the camera.

Stockholm has lots of wooded areas as well as lots of water.

Theme from Harry Potter.
