We were all taken with Copenhagen and enjoyed our stay
- despite it being our last stop and our trip home being
delayed by a couple of days!
We found the best bike rental shop for the world - CPH
- and rented five bikes very reasonably. Copenhagen
is well organised for bikes with bike lanes everywhere,
much like Holland - but with broader thoroughfares than
Amsterdam.
Fiona's Journal
From Stockholm it was an overnight train journey to
Malmo where we changed train for Copenhagen. Our original
itinerary allowed us two nights there but we could not
get a ferry booking (at a sensible price) until September
30th so we ended up with four nights. This proved to
be a real bonus as we loved this city and our 12 storey,
tower block HI hostel there. Bicycles are almost as
prevalent there as they are in Amsterdam and cycle lanes
are clearly marked, wide and respected by traffic, throughout
the city so we hired five bikes. They came from an admirable,
and very friendly, two-man bike-rental business, the
bulk of whose profits go towards supplying bikes to
remote parts of Africa; mine was an old-fashioned, very
upright, black Raleigh, with broad leather seat and
wicker basket, on which I felt rather elegant. Henceforth,
we cycled everywhere in Copenhagen and grew to love
it.
Our hostel was a sociable place and in the communal
kitchen we often got chatting to people. Ian met a German,
an American and a Frenchman (no this is not the start
of a bad joke!) and invited them to eat with us on our
last night. He cooked big pot of pasta with a variety
of sauces and a very sociable, multilingual, animated
evening of conversation ensued. I wish we had managed
this more often during our travels and realised that
it only happened because all parties had a pretty good
command of English. When we travel again I think we
should chose one country to explore in detail and make
a concerted effort to learn the language before we go.
The question is, which country?!
